Simple Bench Top Leg and Skirt Assembly
From time to time we offer this leg kit for sale. If we do not, building one yourself is very easy. You can use
any type of scrap wood you have laying around with success. You are welcome to use these directions for
assembly or designing your own bench top stand.
Start off with making a simple box constructed with butt joints. Notice that the short sides are inside the
lengths. What style joinery you use is up to your preference. We like to simply use a nail gun with glue for
this job. You will not see the nail or screw marks once you attach the legs. Pick measurements that stay
inside the table top
Take a simple "L" shaped leg and place it around the four corners of the skirt on a flat surface. Attach the
legs from the inside of the skirt. (Note, If you are going to use screws to attach, it would be wise to predrill
the holes before assembling the skirt) You can attach the legs to the skirt in your preferred method.
Shown here is the use of screws. This does not have to be a permanent attachment.
When attaching the skirt to the table top (bottom) you have several options and they all are based on
personal preference. Some wood workers glue it directly to the bottom of the table, and others use screws.
To add some additional support to the skirt install a block of scrap wood or a 45 degree angle cut from
scrap. If you pre-drill the support before installing you can screw the assembly to the table top. We
recommend using a good quality screw designed for MDF or using our threaded insert. This is not shown
in the photos below.
Here are some sample skirts and legs that can be built with this technique.
